Project Overview

Seattle Sutton is a food delivery business with approximately 20 distributors in the Chicagoland area. They have single orders as well as subscriptions and the distributors are all independent operators. They had a site that was old built fully custom and wanted to get off the old platform with high monthly costs and make small business changes at the same time.

Objectives

A new e-commerce website with modern look and functionality

A way for users to transact through a checkout with unlimited payment processors so that all orders can be settled in the correct distributor accounts

A way in which the distribution network could interact with head office to place orders, manage orders and be provided with reports

A way in which head office could manage the distributors data, orders and shipping/delivery zones

The ability to have accurate shipping and taxation

Achieve it all through a single BigCommerce SaaS website

The Build

We split the work up across two teams in the office, the front end team and the backend team. The front end team took care of consulting on the design. We used Shogun design management so that the Seattle Sutton team could build the site as they wanted and we could come in afterwards and work on anything for mobile or cross browser that was not rendering correctly.

The backend team used our specifications documents to start coding the distributor OMS and the custom checkout.

The OMS needed to have the following custom features:

  • A replication of the BigCommerce orders screen as the distributors were not able to login to BigCommerce to manage orders. These order listing would have manipulations to them to be specific to their needs, such as dispatch date, subscription or one-time order, and delivery or pickup.
  • We also needed to replicate the coupon management system as the distributors could run their own promotions. Given we had the custom checkout, we were able to do a lot more management around the coupons including adding a prefix so that they were all unique to distributors when built through the OMS.
  • The ability to order through the OMS as a distributor. This had some unique business logic that made it very difficult to manage but ultimately utilizing the checkout SDK we were able to work around those issues. We would expand more on this but this has some of the secret sauce of how Seattle Sutton works as a business that we should keep private.
  • Besides the replications we needed to make custom reports for distributor-based shipping,HQ kitchen reporting, HQ global shipping, and distributor order reports.
  • Additionally, there was a settings panel to achieve managing ordering cut off times, distributors payment gateways, distributor landing page information including delivery distance and shipping charge, as well as distributor permissions and setup.

The OMS was a large component to the site and is very essential to Seattle Sutton running their business.

The counterpart to the OMS was the custom checkout. The custom checkout was built on the checkout SDK that BigCommerce provides. This checkout allowed us to do some pretty amazing things. Here are just a few;

  • Allow the user to select a zip code first to start the checkout process
  • Present a map of locations to choose from based on the zip code and available locations
  • The ability to select the location and have custom shipping options presented
  • Reduce the checkout down to 2 actual steps
  • Include a complex card vaulting system for unlimited distributors
  • Manage a custom coupon code system
  • Change the price of an item ordered based on choices in the checkout (who is fulfilling the order)
  • Present very specific shipping choices to the end user
  • Facilitate a multi ship (2 shipment product) and a single shipment and present accurate costs
  • Run a concurrent taxation system to adhere to Chicago taxation

Project Takeaways

Agility & communication

Complex applications require an agile approach with SaaS and we need to be sure and communicate everything we can along the way to ensure that the customer knows how the decisions made will affect the cost and outcome of the project.

Multi-store approach

We proved out a model that a single site can have a multi-transactional gateway setup to facilitate unlimited stores, including card vaulting (using different gateways).

Digital transformation

An established business has a hard time changing business process, so during great change in a full-online business, it is best to keep things as close to the way they are and change things once the new site is deployed (keeping in mind the overall goals of course and build for both as best they can).
